Stroke

What Is Stroke?

A stroke is when the blood supply to a part of your brain suddenly goes away. It can lead to serious disability or even death! Some risk factors include: high blood pressure, smoking cigarettes, diabetes and being overweight.

Strokes are not just dangerous because they interrupt the flow of oxygen-rich blood through our brains. but also because there may be damage done while we’re still alive. High risk factors for strokes include high pressure, smoking cigarettes, diabetes, obesity; these behaviors will ultimately make us more susceptible regardless if one day we have a stroke or not

Types Of Stroke

Strokes are one of the most devastating things that can happen to you or someone close.
There are four main types: ischemic, hemorrhagic and embolic stroke and Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA)

  1. Ischemic Stroke

An ischemic stroke occurs when there isn’t enough blood flowing through your body due to a blockage. It might occur somewhere else like at heart valves/arteries leading from the head where it supplies oxygenated arterial blood for nourishment to all parts including our brains.

This condition interrupts function such as speaking, understanding speech and even moving properly because some cells will die off quickly without being supplied with needed nutrients while other may be alive but

  2. Hemorrhagic Stroke

This occurs when a blood vessel ruptures. These are usually the result of aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Symptoms include seizures, headaches, confusion, and hallucinations.

Hemorrhages can be treated with surgery to remove blood clots or decrease pressure on parts of the brain.

  3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

This occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is inadequate for a brief period of time. It starts suddenly and lasts for less than five minutes, but can cause some symptoms that may last up to two weeks such as dizziness or slurred speech.

If you experience any sudden changes in vision, trouble with coordination or weakness on one side of your body contact emergency services immediately

  4. Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA)

A cerebral vascular accident is when there is a blockage near your artery which circulates cerebrospinal fluid within your head. This usually occurs because either some type of thrombus has developed inside them blocking out any more circulation into the area as well as causing physical damages like tearing at those regions both.

General Symptom Of Stroke

A stroke is a medical emergency. It’s important to note these symptoms because they show up without warning! If you experience any of those things it’s crucial for you to seek help immediately.

The most common symptom involved with strokes are:

  1. Extreme confusion–such as not being able to speak properly, including difficulty speaking and understanding speech
  2. Experiencing headaches with altered consciousness or vomiting.
  3. Numbness in parts of the face, arm, leg on either side of their body.
  4. Vision problems in one eye or both eyes.
  5. Difficulty walking, including dizziness and a lack of coordination

What Are Causes and Prevention of Stroke

The first step in preventing a stroke is to be aware of the risks. The followings are the leading causes for stroke and how to prevent it.

  1. Lower Blood Pressure

Lowering blood pressure not only decreases your chances of stroke, it also helps you to manage heart disease and diabetes.

  2. Lose Weight

Losing weight is one of the best ways to reduce your stroke risk. Obesity raises a person’s odds for having this debilitating condition and you could improve that prognosis by losing as little as 10 pounds.

  3. Exercise More

Exercise contributes to losing weight and lowering blood pressure, but it also stands on its own as an independent stroke reducer. This is because exercise lowers a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease by increasing the heart rate.
This in turn increases oxygen delivery to cells that are crucial contributors of healthy circulation.

  4. Reduce your Alcohol Consumption

It’s important to remember that some drinking is okay, but too much can be deadly. Drinking one drink per day may decrease your risk of stroke.
However, once you go over two drinks a day it spikes sharply and will increase the likelihood of having stroke.

  5. Treat Atrial fibrillation

The atrial fibrillation is a serious issue for people with this form of irregular heartbeat. It can lead to clots forming in the heart that then travel through blood vessels and produce strokes if they end up in areas such as your brain.

The risk of stroke from having Atrial alone, without other factors contributing, is almost five times higher than someone who doesn’t have it!

  6. Treat Diabetes

The continued presence of high blood sugar damages the lining of your vessels over time, making it easier for clots to form and blocking off a major flow route.

The buildup from excess sugars in our system can lead to dangerous problems such as strokes or heart attacks. Because some cells that line them are damaged by this process and make platelets more likely to stick together.

  7. Quit Smoking

Smoking contributes to cardiovascular disease in two different ways. It increases the buildup of plaque on your artery walls and it thins out your blood making clots more likely.

Smoking cessation is one of the most impactful lifestyle changes you can make for a healthy stroke-free life, but quitting is easier said than done!
