When you turn on your new phone, smart tv, or game console, you’ll probably be greeted with a bright and colorful screen with several options and apps that offer a host of features. You’re looking at your devices user interface, and it’s what you’ll be interacting with the most whenever you use the product.

Some of the most important factors in determining product success are how well a consumer responds to them, how easily they can navigate them, and how appealing it looks. Product design extends not only to how it looks on the outside, but how it functions when it’s on and running too.

This is why UI and UX are critically important, because they are the main point of access a consumer has to the features of a product. No two menus are exactly alike when comparing different products, but what every interface on every successful device shares in common is the visual appeal and smooth navigation.

What Sets a Good UI Apart

UI is what the user interacts with the most when they use a product, everything they do from making phone calls, to launching apps, to changing settings are all done within the purview of menus and icons. If a UI is designed poorly, then consumers are going to have trouble accessing the features they brought the device to use in the first place, and might not even be aware of some features that it may have.

With a well designed UI, a user should be able to navigate and find what they’re looking for as quickly as possible. They shouldn’t jump through hoops to perform the most simple tasks that the device offers. The visual style of a user interface should compliment the design of the product as a whole rather than detract from it. Businesses who develop software pay keen attention to UI design elements and try to avoid common pitfalls like formatting not fitting the screen or text being too small. Since multiple devices by a manufacturer typically run the same UI, the visual style must adhere to every device and work the same across the board.

Some of the design philosophy employed by a UI/UX design agency that goes into a successful experience include creating elements that fit the screen and making sure that assets and images are the highest quality possible. Keeping text aligned and on screen and making sure colors of text and background elements don’t hinder readability are of paramount importance as well.

User Interfaces have certainly evolved over the past several years, common design trends back a few years ago are no longer in use as devices have changed. Some of the most common trends you’ll see in interfaces today are uniform icons that are consistently the same style and size even from vastly different apps.

UI is essential to the way consumers interact with their products and services, and is often the most important element of a design. If a UI isn’t properly implemented for a particular device, it could inhibit usability for the entire device as a whole. A well implemented one on the other hand will enhance the experience exponentially.
