All dogs have their charm and these unique pups can vary in size, look, and temperament. So what then makes designer dogs so special?. Designer dogs are crossbred dog that has purebred parents. These dogs are the result of a deliberate decision to create a specific hybrid dog.
This group of pups can be big or small, playful or sedate, snobby or friendly, but all of them have that “it factor” you cannot ignore. While many of these four-legged friends are considered trendy, they are still a tail-wagging dog in their own right with a whole lot of personality to get to know.
They also possess what’s called “hybrid vigor,” often making them healthier than their purebred counterparts.
Popular Designer Dog Breeds
There are more than 500 designer dog breeds today. Here are some of them;
Labradoodles
Labradoodles are a product of Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Like most Labrador Retrievers and poodles, Labradoodles are generally friendly, energetic and good with families and children. Labradoodles often display an affinity for water and strong swimming ability from their parent breeds.
Siberian Retriever
Labs have reigned supreme as the most popular dog breed for nearly 30 years now, so it’s no surprise their prized traits also frequently appear in mixed breeds. This combo with a Siberian Husky is slightly smaller than its purebred cousins.
Goldendoodles
Goldendoodles are bred from a golden retriever and a Poodle. They are the epitome of what a dog should be: loyal and loving. These pups are highly intelligent, and love to show off their shaggy, wavy coat. (Read: easier training!) Temperamentally even and playful, Goldendoodles are great with kids. Be prepared to provide your new hybrid with lots of room to run, though — they require moderate exercise daily, both indoors and out.
The Mini Hippo
The Mini Hippo is an intelligent, friendly, playful pup that is a great family pet. This small designer dog is great with kids and affectionate, although they can be stubborn. Needing a moderate amount of exercise, this adorable pooch gets its name from their snout that resembles a hippopotamus. Bred from two polar opposite parents, the Cocker Spaniel and Shar-Pei mix inherited both of their parents’ best traits.
Pomsky
For those dog lovers who want to adopt a Siberian Husky but simply can’t fit one in their small space, there’s the Pomsky, a cross between the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian. These dogs have everything that Husky fanatics favor—those big blue eyes, those adorable pointed ears—but unlike their purebred relatives, they only grow to be about 15 pounds on average.
Cavachon
The Cavachon is a hybrid breed between a Bichon Frise and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
These dogs are easily trained and require daily grooming. The Cavachons carry a kind, affectionate, and gentle nature. They love human companionship
Puggle
A beagle and a pug are crossbred to create a puggle. The small, short-coated puggle is a mix of two breeds that each contribute unique traits. While the pug is more of a lap dog, the beagle is known for its independence—resulting in a designer dog known for its loyalty as much as its stubbornness.
Aussie Pom
The Aussie Pom is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Pomeranian, bred to serve as a compact companion dog with an easy temperament. Though these furry friends resemble Pomeranians in their facial features, you can easily tell them apart from their tiny parent breed thanks to their coats, which usually take after Australian Shepherds.
Cockapoo
The Cockapoo (part cocker spaniel, part poodle) is one of the most popular mixed-breed dogs. They aren’t prone to shedding and can be easily trained, making them a great choice for families.
The Morkie
The Morkie is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese. Typically, they are very small and weigh a maximum of 15 pounds. They have very fine and often wiry fur that needs to be brushed and groomed often. This is an incredibly loyal and devoted pooch that can have separation anxiety if left on their own. Otherwise, this is a happy, playful pup.
