Sickle cell disease, or SCD, is a genetic condition that affects red blood cells. These cells contain hemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein. Usually, they are round and can easily pass through the small vessels of the body to deliver oxygen to all areas.

Types of SCD

HbSS

People who have this form of SCD inherit two genes, one from each parent, that code for hemoglobin “S.” Hemoglobin S is an abnormal form of hemoglobin that causes the red cells to become rigid, and sickle-shaped. This is commonly called sickle cell anemia and is usually the most severe form of the disease.

HbSC

Those with SCD likely have a gene for hemoglobin “S” from one parent and a defective gene for the abnormal hemoglobin “C” from the other parent, which is generally less severe than the other forms of this condition.

HbS beta thalassemia

Sickle Cell Disease is passed down genetically when a person inherits a mutated hemoglobin ‘S’ gene from one parent and another gene for beta thalassemia, another type of hemoglobin abnormality, from the other parent. There are two forms of beta thalassemia – HbS beta0 and HbS beta+ – both with unique symptoms and treatments.

HbS beta0-thalassemia tends to cause a severe form of SCD, while HbS beta+-thalassemia is usually associated with a less severe version of the condition.
