Nakivo is a VMware/Hyper-V Backup & Replication solution which is capable of performing native, agentless, image-based VM backup and replication. Nakivo uses Changed Block Tracking (for VMware) or Resilient Change Tracking (for Hyper-V) to perform incremental backups and thus increase the VM backup speed.

Install Nakivo Backup & Replication tool on Linux
There are two standard ways of installing Nakivo Backup & Replication tool on Linux.
- Using OVA image – This is imported on VMware Infrastructure
- Using installation shell script – Can be installed on Linux OS; Both Debian and Red Hat distributions
In this guide, we will look at installation of Nakivo using a shell script.
Step 1: Install dependencies
On Ubuntu and SLES, NAKIVO Backup & Replication relies on the following packages:
- cifs-utils, open-iscsi and ntfs-3g
On RedHat Enterprise Linux, NAKIVO Backup & Replication relies on the following packages:
- cifs-utils, iscsi-initiator-utils, ntfs-3g
Install packages on Ubuntu:
sudo apt update sudo apt install cifs-utils open-iscsi ntfs-3g
On CentOS and RHEL, use the commands:
sudo yum -y install cifs-utils iscsi-initiator-utils ntfs-3g
Once these packages are installed, proceed to install Nakivo.
Step 2: Download and install Nakivo
Download Nakivo installation script from Nakivo Downloads Page. Once the download is complete, make the file executable
chmod +x NAKIVO_Backup_Replication_*_Installer_TRIAL.sh
Run the installer file to start the installation process.
$ sudo ./NAKIVO_Backup_Replication_vX_Installer_TRIAL.sh

NAKIVO Backup & Replication installed successfully.Step 3: Open ports on the firewall
If you have firewall service running, you need to open the ports on the firewall. The ports to open are:
- Port 4443 is the director https port. This is used to access the Web UI of NAKIVO Backup & Replication)
- Port 9446 is used by Nakivo Transporter. This is used to connect to the Transporter that is installed by default with the Director
- Port range 9448-10000 is used by Nakivo Onboard Transporter to transfer data
sudo firewall-cmd --add-port={4443,9446,9448-10000}/tcp --permanent
Reload firewalld rules for the new rules to be effective.
sudo firewall-cmd --reload
The default backup repository for Nakivo is /opt/nakivo/repository/. It is recommended to make this directory a network share mount point. This will ensure you have enough storage for use by Nakivo.
Step 4: Accessing NAKIVO Backup & Replication UI
After the installation is complete, you can log in to NAKIVO Backup & Replication by going to the following URL in your web browser: https://machine_IP_or_DNS:director_https_port.
You will be prompted to configure admin user account. You need to provide:
- Username
- Email address
- Password
Then click the Proceed button to save the changes. You will then to Nakivo initial dashboard where you can start setting up Nakivo.
