How to Install Anaconda on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS | Google Cloud

Anaconda package manager, environment manager for scalable data science projects. Anaconda Distribution is a free, with 1000+ open source packages.

In this guide you are going to install Anaconda on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on Google Cloud Platform.

Prerequisites

Your Compute Engine Instance running, see the Setting up Compute Engine Instance

Download Anaconda Bash Script

Once your server is set up and running, SHH to your server and download the latest installer bash script.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

cd /tmp
curl -O https://repo.anaconda.com/archive/Anaconda3-5.3.0-Linux-x86_64.sh

This will download the Anaconda installer.

Install Anaconda

Once the download is completed, you can run the installer to install Anaconda.

bash Anaconda3-5.3.0-Linux-x86_64.sh

You will receive the output to accept the License Agreement as follows:

Welcome to Anaconda3 5.3.0
In order to continue the installation process, please review the license
agreement.
Please, press ENTER to continue
>>>
Do you accept the license terms? [yes|no]  

Press Enter to continue the installation and type yes to accept when prompted.

Now you can provide the location to install Anaconda or choose the default location.

Anaconda3 will now be installed into this location:
/home/username/anaconda3
Press ENTER to confirm the location
Press CTRL-C to abort the installation
Or specify a different location below
[/home/username/anaconda3] >>> 

Press Enter to confirm the location and you will need to agree to install Anaconda in the confirmed location.

Do you wish the installer to initialize Anaconda3
in your /home/username/.bashrc ? [yes|no]
[no] >>>

Now the installation process will start and it will take some time for the process to complete.

Initializing Anaconda3 in /home/username/.bashrc
A backup will be made to: /home/username/.bashrc-anaconda3.bak

Once the installation is completed you will get the option to install VSCode. You can either install or skip this.

For this change to become active, you have to open a new terminal.

To install Visual Studio Code, you will need:
Administrator Privileges
Internet connectivity
Visual Studio Code License: https://code.visualstudio.com/license

Activate and Test Anaconda

To activate the installation in your same terminal session run the following commands.

cd ~/
source ~/.bashrc

Verify the Anaconda installation with the conda command.

conda list

Now Anaconda is installed successfully on your Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on Google Cloud Compute Engine.
